Hold'em probability tables

pocket pair flops a set or better

How often things happen in Texas Hold'em, counted exactly. There are 1,326 possible starting hands, 19,600 possible flops once your two cards are out, and 2,118,760 possible five-card boards. Every one of them was counted, so there is no simulation error anywhere on this page — and each row shows the raw count over the total, so you can reproduce the percentage with a calculator.

A pocket pair arrives 5.88% of the time (1 in 17.0) and flops a set or better 11.8% of the time. Two unpaired cards connect with the flop — at least one of them pairs — only 32.4% of the time, so roughly two flops in three miss completely. Even by the river, an unpaired hand makes a pair or better just 48.7% of the time, short of half.

Preflop

Odds of being dealt each hand

Out of the 1,326 ways to take two cards from 52. AK shows up 1.21% of the time (1 in 82.9), 2.67 times as often as AA. Suited hands are 23.5% of all deals.

Flopping a set

Identical for every pair — there are always exactly two cards of your rank left. Calling just to hit a set means you need enough chips behind (implied odds) to overcome 7.5-to-1 against on the flop.

Suited versus offsuit

By the river: 6.40% for a suited hand against 1.85% for an offsuit one (using a single hole card). That gap is most of the reason suitedness is worth a few points of equity.

Straights

How the gap changes it

Each extra gap removes one of the straights both cards can make. By the river the straight rate falls from 9.12% for 98 to 4.24% for Q8 (straights made by the board alone are not counted).

8 outs means two different ranks complete the straight (an open-ender or a double gutshot); 4 outs means one rank (a gutshot). The examples sit in the middle of the deck; hands touching the ace or the 2–4 end can make fewer straights and score lower. Counted with offsuit cards.

Flop odds for each of the 169 hands

The tables above use one representative hand each; here every one of the 169 hands is enumerated on its own. Every pair flops a set equally often — what differs is how often it stays an overpair. Among unpaired hands, JTs, T9s, 98s and 4 others flop a pair or a strong draw most often (50.6%) and AKo, A2o least often (32.8%). The straight rate by the river ranges from 9.12% for JTs, JTo, T9s and 11 others down to 1.69% for K2s, K2o. Tied hands share a rank.

"Pair or strong draw" = at least one hole card pairs, two or more of your suit land (suited hands only), a straight is made, or an eight-out straight draw appears. One-card flush draws for offsuit hands are not counted. Tap a hand for its full breakdown and equity page.

Method

No simulation involved

Every figure here was counted case by case by precompute-probability.mjs (data generated 2026-10-21). A separately written verify-probability.mjs checks each row against the closed-form combinatorics (C(50,3) − C(48,3) = 2,304, and so on) and re-enumerates the straight table with an independent bitmask implementation. The bigger-pair table is checked against inclusion–exclusion for KK and, for the other rows, against a one-million-hand Monte Carlo run used only as a cross-check.

These are frequencies of a shape, not win rates — whether a set or a flush actually wins depends on the other hand. Showdown equity for two specific hands lives on the hand pages and the matchup pages.

FAQ

What are the odds of being dealt a pocket pair?

5.88%. Of the 1,326 possible two-card holdings, 78 are pairs, so it happens once every 17.0 hands. One specific pair such as AA is 0.452% — once every 221 hands.

How often does a pocket pair flop a set?

At least one more card of your rank hits the flop 11.8% of the time (1 in 8.5, 7.5 to 1 against). That splits into an exact set 10.8%, a full house 0.735% and quads 0.245%. By the river it rises to 19.2%. The figure is the same for every pair.

How often does a suited hand make a flush?

Three of your suit on the flop — a made flush — is 0.842%, and a four-card flush draw is 10.9%. By the river a flush using both hole cards completes 6.40% of the time. An offsuit hand can still make a one-card flush, but only 1.85%, so suited hands get there about 3.5 times as often.

If I hold KK, how likely is someone to have AA?

0.49% against one opponent, 2.44% at a six-handed table and 3.91% at a full nine-handed table. With QQ, the chance that someone holds AA or KK is 7.67% against eight opponents, and with 22 the chance that someone has a bigger pair climbs to 38.33%.
